End of Term Prayer
We thank you Lord, for this Term.
For the challenges, the successes and the mistakes from which we have learnt.
Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends.
Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith.
Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others.
To be peacemakers in our family.
Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun.
Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term.
We thank you for our friends, teachers and parents
And a community that cares for us.
May we always be conscious of your love in our lives.
Amen
Once again I wish to thank all staff, students and parents for another extraordinary term. Enjoy a well deserved break and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 4.
God Bless

Principal
This week sees the end of thirteen years of schooling for our Yr 12 2022 Graduating Class. This time evokes different feelings and emotions for students: excitement in anticipation of beginning a new phase of life; sadness in leaving a place that has nurtured them for 6 years; trepidation in contemplating what lies ahead; for some, there will be regret for what could have been; and for others, joy and satisfaction for what has been achieved and will be in the upcoming exams. One thing that is most important is that through the guidance of their parents, families, teachers and friends they have all become wonderful young adults who will contribute much to our society.
I take this opportunity to thank our College Captains, Courtney Martin and Harrison Colyer and Vice Captains, Joseph Clarke and Ariella Coster along with Lilli-Yana Moody and Jayden Duff, our SRC representatives. They have led our student body with a fine example of strong leadership through their responsible, respectful and supportive qualities. I wish our Year 12 class all the very best for their upcoming exams and ask the Holy Spirit to be with them at this time.
As Term 3 draws to a close, I am sure we are all looking forward to a well earned rest in the beautiful spring weather we are experiencing. The holidays provide us with time to recharge our batteries and hopefully allow us more time with our families. It is a time that can allow for a little more freedom with students' personal appearance. Please ensure that all extreme haircuts, nails, makeup, jewellery and uniform are all in accordance with the College’s Uniform Policy come the first day of Term 4.
Until next term:

Year 12 Graduation 2022 Student Acknowledgements:
This week saw the conclusion of formal lessons for our Year 12 students, culminating in their Prayer Service and Graduation in the presence of The Most Reverend Greg Homeming, our Bishop.
This was a significant event this year as it marked the return of celebrations amongst our community post COVID-19. It was a chance for our Year 12 students to be acknowledged for their academic achievements and talents before their parents, families and our entire College staff and student body.
This year’s ceremony saw keynote speaker, Mr Grant Phillips (Year 12 2005) address the College and share his passion as a Senior Producer for Reality TV in Australia.
Whilst the College’s Major Award recipients will be acknowledged elsewhere in this newsletter, I would like to make special mention of our Year 12 performers this week, namely:
- Joseph Clarke for his Drama performance “Wanna hear a joke?”
- Sally McConnell, Grace McCormack, Ashlinn de Dassel and Nathan Wood for their Music performances
- Ashlinn de Dassel and Nathan Wood for their rendition of the National Anthem
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank our Year 12 College Captains, Courtney Martyn & Harrison Colyer, Vice Captains Ariella Coster & Joseph Clarke and SRC members Lilli-Yana Moody & Jayden Duff. Their leadership during 2022 has been selfless, demonstrating what servant leadership really is.

Year 12
Year 12 Breakfast and Picnic Day
On Tuesday several staff and parents made an early start to the day to prepare for the annual Year 12 Breakfast. There was plenty to do like cook sausages, eggs and toast and prepare fruit platters and cakes. There were also plenty of balloons and decorations to setup. We all worked as a team and fed all year 12 students and others who joined in. I would just like to say thank you to all the staff and parents who helped get it all together on the day. We also avoided the rain which was a blessing.
After breakfast, year 12 headed to Boambee Creek for a fun and relaxing day enjoying each other's company. We had a bit of rain but we didn’t let that spoil our fun. We had hamburgers for lunch and enjoyed throwing a frisbee, playing some beach cricket and kicking footys around. It was a great way to prepare for our Graduation the very next day. I would like to thank Tracey Bailey and her team for preparing our lunch, it was appreciated by all.

God Bless
The 2022 Lawn Bowls fundraising initiative for Cando Cancer Trust and Bridging the Gap-Mens Resource Centre was a tremendous success raising approximately $1900 to add to our existing fundraising efforts. I would like to say a massive thank you to our fundraising leaders, Laila and Caitlyn and the fundraising team for their help in getting this day to run and its success. I would also like to thank Thane Duncan and Nicole of Park Beach Bowls Club, for their amazing generosity and cooperation in assisting in coordinating this event and making it a worthwhile day. I would also like to thank thse who were abke to be involved in the event. This event was not only supported by SJPC students and staff but many Park Beach Bowling Club members also got behind the event and were incredibly generous, which added to the success of this event.

Thank you to all our sponsors including Park Beach Bowling Club, Korora Bay Village, Big Country Meats, Banana Coast Hotbake, C Change Adventures, Southern Cross Commercial Cleaning, Moon Dragon Chinese Restaurant, Fancy Pants Fancy Dress Shop and everyone who was involved, it all makes a world of difference.

A great sense of humour, a healthy sense of camaraderie and a splash of drama have been the winning ingredients for the two St John Paul College Tournament of Minds (TOM) teams who were both named Regional Champions and recently attended the NSW State finals that were hosted at the University of NSW.
The teams were highly successful at the Regional competition hosted in Port Macquarie a month ago and scored the highest marks for team originality, cooperative strategies and problem solving which reflected the huge amount of hours that the two teams had put in to write and perform a 10 minute solution to the posed problem and also create a variety of props and backdrops for their presentation.
The Language Literature team included Grace Cuthbertson, Ava Harrison, Connor Gleeson, Ellie Cregan, Georgia Pierce, Harper Dent and Daisy Jupp. The Arts team included Kai Davidson, Kai Robinsen, Savannah-May Winchester, Charlotte Beadle, Luca Mighell, Katelyn Davidson and Robbie Haig.
While the teams were unsuccessful at the finals, they had an amazing time in Sydney. Some of the students were able to catch a train for the first time while all of them were thrilled to visit the Sydney Opera House which was resplendent in its final farewell to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Special thanks go to Markus Muschal who ran a Drama workshop to help prepare the students for the State competition, Paul Harrison who gave up his weekend to travel with the team and Michael Carniato who supported the team leading into the finals.

There are a group of people in the community who are doing all they can to create a better world and they recently invited local high school students to share their vision.
Recently returned after Covid-19, the Coffs Harbour Rotary Club hosted their annual Public Speaking Competition last Wednesday night for senior high school students in the local area.
St John Paul College was represented by two speakers; Koko Nichols in Year 10 and Lilly Gleeson in Year 11. Both speakers have already excelled in our school competition and were eager to develop their skills against the students from Orara High School who had also taken up the challenge.
Both girls spoke with flair and originality and addressed the Rotary Four Way Test of Truth, Fairness, Goodwill and Beneficial for all.
Congratulations to Koko whose speech on “individuality” was outstanding and she won the competition. She will progress to the Rotary District competition that will be held in Tamworth next year.

Variety Activate Inclusion Sports Day
We have registered for an exciting venture that is being offered in Coffs Harbour. Sport NSW invites all students with a sensory, physical or intellectual disability to the FREE Activate Inclusion Sports Day.
Variety Activate Inclusion Sports Day
Proudly supported by Variety - the Children's Charity NSW/ACT and delivered by Disability Sports Australia - the event is designed to provide students aged 5-18 with the opportunity to experience mainstream sports in a positive and inclusive environment, with the use of adaptive equipment.
Participants will experience a variety of modified sporting activities on the day, to be facilitated by specialised coaches with the support of students from local universities and community organisations.
Prior to the Activation Inclusion event, Sport NSW asks each student to complete a pre-event survey either online - please email me (danielle.mcara@lism.catholic.edu.au) or Mrs Tanya Slaviero (tanya.slaviero@lism.catholic.edu.au) if you would like to register your child for this event. We will provide you with the parent survey and media release that will need to be completed and returned by 2nd November. This enables Sport NSW, Variety - the Children's Charity NSW/ACT and Disability Sports Australia to improve service quality delivery and cater to the needs of all participants.
Key information:
- Your child will be paricipating as a representative of SJPC and as such will be provided with a representative uniform for the day.
- The event is on Friday 11 November at Sportz Central, 10am - 1pm.
- Final registrations for this event will be required to the Sport Department by Wednesday 2nd November.
Term 4 Internal Sport
Term 4 brings with it a range of new and familiar sports for our Year 7’s and 8’s. A more detailed overview of each group is attached.
Year 7 Boys and Girls - will be on campus, participating in an Interhouse challenge. Students will be divided into a house team and will be required to participate in all events as a member of that team for the duration of the term.
Year 8 Girls - will rotate between activities such as fishing, beach games, martial arts (self defense) and visits to the World Gym.
Year 8 Boys - will particiapte in the OSSA program. This is a vital program, that not only covers essential PDHPE outcomes but also equips our students with confidence in our coastal environment. The Lifeguards will guide and gently teach the students surf conditions at their level of experience. This is a compulsory event and all students are expected to participate every week. All students must complete the course, but only those who pass all skills (determined by the Lifeguards) will be able to select Surfing as a sport in Year 9 and 10.

Compass - New Office Procedures
Permission to Leave School during the Day - Early Departure
Please note early departures or late arrivals cannot be submitted as an attendance note via the Compass App. Only full day absences can be submitted using the attendance note via the Compass App.
Students must have a written note from their parents/carers, giving an explanation and requesting permission to leave the College at a specific time. Students must take the note to the College Office before school and a Compass reminder notice is uploaded on the students dashboard. At the allocated time, students must return to the College Office to formally sign out for the day and return the handwritten note. If students return to school later in the day they are required to sign in at the College Office.
For urgent appointments or requests to leave the College without a written note, parents/carers are required to collect their student from the College Office. Students will not be dismissed from class until parents/carers arrival at the College Office. Please allow enough time for the Office staff to retrieve students, as there could be delays leaving the Office. If students are able to bring a note in the morning this will alleviate any delay.
