Library Matters

Welcome to another year in the Library at SJPC. It has been wonderful to see many of the year 7 and new students making use of our wonderful space. Our library is open before school from 8:00 a.m., every recess and lunch. Only occasionally does something happen to prevent us opening.

Students are welcome to sit and read, complete schoolwork or play one of our games. By week 4 we will have our lunchtime program up and running. This will include opportunities to use our Virtual Reality headset, play chess and other board games and attend book club. We are open to suggestions for lunchtime activities.

Library Resources

Students can login with their username and password to access Oliver our library catalogue. They can see what resources we hold in the library and what resources they have borrowed. As long as a resource is not overdue, resources can be renewed by students. We also provide access to a number of electronic resources. Sora provides access to eBooks and audiobooks. Digital video content is provided by Clickview Online

Homework Centre

Our College Homework Centre currently operates after school until 5:00 pm each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students must be collected from the College by 5:00 p.m. Occasionally we are unable to keep the library open but students will be given adequate notice via Daily Notices and will be able to contact parents if necessary.

A wide range of students make use of the Homework Centre. Many come who are highly motivated and want to take advantage of the quiet space and resources to get their work done. Other students come needing help with particular assignments while others come to review class work. Students who are working on group assignments are also welcome.

The Homework Centre has been of great benefit to the whole school community. It is hoped th this year students will again take advantage of this service.

Printing

The Library has 2 printers for student use. Reasonable usage is free. Documents can also be scanned and emailed or saved to the student's Google Drive.

A student library card is needed to print and borrow resources from the library. Year 7 and new students have been issued with a temporary card. If a card is lost, replacements can be purchased.

Technology

Digital Technology Student User Agreement

Last Friday, all parents and carers received a compass notification regarding SJPC’s Digital Technology Student User Agreement.

This agreement is designed to ensure that parents and students understand the conditions that apply to using Digital Technology at St John Paul College which is part of the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools. (DLCS). We aim to develop responsible, safe and ethical digital citizens who are proficient in their use of digital technologies.

This agreement must be agreed upon and acknowledged by both parents/carers and students by Friday 21 February to ensure uninterrupted access to our college network. Thank you to everyone who has already acknowledged this agreement.

It has come to our attention that some parents have had difficulty accessing this notification from a mobile device. The notification is not showing in the app and you need to click on Open in Browser.

If you have any questions, or have been unable to access this agreement via Compass, please contact the College Office and staff will guide you through the process.

Devices

Please note that the new arrangement detailed below supercedes any previous agreements.

If your student’s device is damaged and being repaired, a limited number of loan devices are available to borrow upon the receipt of a note addressed to library staff. All loans are now for a maximum of 6 weeks to allow time to repair or purchase a device. The first 2 weeks are free of charge. If it’s not returned within 2 weeks, $60 will be billed via Compass for the remainder of the 6 week period. After 6 weeks the loan cannot be extended and the device must be returned to the library. As we have a limited number of devices available, timely return is essential so other students can benefit from this service. Demand for these loan devices is currently high, and availability cannot be guaranteed, hence the need for the strictly limited time period.

Please note: We do not lend devices to students who have simply forgotten to bring their own device to school.
