School Counsellors

In Week 3 SJPC students will transition to learning at school.  We have been thinking about what might be helpful to consider as students and families go through this next change.  We are aware that at the beginning of the year students make this change from being at home on a long holiday to going to school.  So, you already have experience in something similar which gives you some ideas about what it might be like and how to make this change.   In some ways this might be easier, as students know their teachers and subjects, and have friendships already established.

Conversation

First, have a conversation to talk with your child about what they are looking forward to.  Give some time to talk about the positive things like catching up with friends and learning at school face to face with teachers.  Many students and teachers are looking forward to doing experiments in science, doing P.E, and other activities that can only happen at school.

Ask your child if they have any worries and consider with them what things they can do, and what things you can do to make it easier.  The return to school will be for one day for Years 7-10 so there will be opportunity for students in these years to get back into the groove.

Ideas to help with some difficulties

Out of practice with contact with friends face to face

  • Arrange for them to catch up with friends face to face and visit family together before they come back to school.
  • Encourage them that they did enjoy being with their friends, and they will quickly feel comfortable again.

Change in routine

  • Move them toward the routine that they will need for school eg. adjusting bed times and waking times, switching off devices well before bed.

  • It will take time to adjust for everyone - parents included.

Concerns about safety with Covid-19

  • The school is taking a range of safety precautions to reduce the risk to students and staff.

Concerns about their learning, what they might have missed.

  • Teachers are available to discuss questions or concerns students might have on any assignments or tasks in subject areas.

We look forward to seeing all the students as they return.  If you need support with adjusting back to school, you can speak with your homeroom teacher, year coordinator and to your school counsellors.
